Net Annual Increment (NAI)

STL - Gross annual increment minus natural losses.

(also see Gross Annual Increment)

(Kuusela, K. 1994, Forest Resources in Europe 1959-90. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK.)

Non-elementary (or complex) flows [LCA]

ECP - In the emission inventory, non-elementary flows include all the inputs (e.g. electricity, materials, transport processes) and outputs (e.g. waste, by-products) in a system that needs further modelling efforts to be transformed into elementary flows.

(EC, 2013a, Commission Recommendation of 9 April 2013 on the use of common methods to measure and communicate the life cycle environmental performance of products and organisations. OJ L124, 04.05.2013, pp. 1-210.)

Non-food

STL -Note: An official definition of “non-food” does not exist. In general it means all uses except of food (and feed) uses.

(Nova-Institute, 2014,'Annex V' in Study on "Methodology framework for the bioeconomy observatory"' - BISO Project - January 2014.)

Normalisation [LCA]

ECP - After the characterisation step, normalisation is an optional step in which the impact assessment results are multiplied by normalisation factors that represent the overall inventory of a reference unit (e.g. a whole country or an average citizen). Normalised impact assessment results express the relative shares of the impacts of the analysed system in terms of the total contributions to each impact category per reference unit. When displaying the normalised impact assessment results of the different impact topics next to each other, it becomes evident which impact categories are affected most and least by the analysed system.

Normalised impact assessment results reflect only the contribution of the analysed system to the total impact potential, not the severity/relevance of the respective total impact. Normalised results are dimensionless, but not additive.

Nutraceutical

STL - Food, food additive, or extract of a food marketed to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against a chronic disease.

(Darzins, A., Pienkos, P. and Edye, L., 2010, Current status and potential for algal biofuels production. A report to IEA Bioenergy Task 39, Report T39-T2, August 2010.)
